چکیده

Unstabilised bisphenol A polycarbonate samples were aged under UV radiation for periods of up to 3000 hours. The samples were then characterised using FTIR/ATR, GPC, SEM, microscopy, light transmission and colour changes. The changes in optical properties were related back to the changes in the polymer microstructure and composition. In this study, the molecular weight of polycarbonate was seen to decrease during UV exposure, making it susceptible to embrittlement and surface erosion. This coupled with the discoloration of the polymer contributed to the loss of optical properties, including reduced light transmission, loss of gloss, increased haze, and discoloration. In the case of reduced light transmission and yellowing of polycarbonate, the degradation mechanisms were identified through infra-red spectroscopy. Photo-induced yellowing was accelerated by humidity, while the reduction in other optical properties was more severe in low humidity environments.

Friction Stir Welding of Dissimilar Poly Methyl Methacrylate and Polycarbonate Sheets

The widespread application of thermoplastic polymers in different aspects of industries has motivated researchers and companies to improve and upgrade their forming, joining and assembling processes to overcome their limitations. One of the newest joining methods of thermoplastics is friction stir welding which is based on frictional heat generated through contact between a rotating tool and th...

Effects of UV irradiation treated polycarbonate substrates on properties of nanocrystalline TiO2 sol-gel derived thin films

In this study, in order to achieve effective coating of the homogeneous titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin film, UV irradiation pre-treatment was carried out to activate PC surfaces before coating. Sol-gel-based nanocrystalline TiO2 thin films were prepared by employing tetrabutyl-titanate as a precursor. Nanocrystalline TiO2 thin films were deposited by sol-gel spin coating on the treated substrates...

Preliminary Evaluation for Vacuum Membrane Distillation (VMD) Energy Requirement

The energy requirement of vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) with or without recirculation was modelled using both experimental results and theoretical data. The trends are generally consistent between the theoretical and experimental data. Thermal energy contributes the most to the total energy required for the VMD process. To lower the thermal energy cost, waste heat resource and heat recover...

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Laser Assisted PC to Polycarbonate Welding

Laser welding is a novel method for direct joining of metals and polymers, which leads to a mechanical and chemical bond between metal and polymer. In this study, feasibility of dissimilar joining between St12 and polycarbonate is studied theoretically. Then, the ND: YAG laser is implemented to join St12 and Polycarbonate. Empirical results indicate creation of a joint between St12 and polycarb...
